Preparing Your Home for Summer
Your home is most likely your largest investment. As we enter the summer months, make sure you are keeping up with regular maintenance to save yourself from unnecessary headaches and expenses. Protect your investment and keep you family safe and cool by performing these recommended checks.
Clean and inspect your refrigerator—including door gaskets and coils
Clean windows and screens – use a hose and mild detergent to clean your window screens, inspect them, repair any damage, and reinstall them in your windows. Don’t pressure wash them — the force of the spray can damage them.
Remove grease buildup from range hood and clean the filter in hot, soapy water
Clean tub and sink drains to prevent clogging and mold growth
Soak showerheads in vinegar to remove mineral deposits
Test smoke alarms – Test smoke alarms and CO detectors, and change out batteries as needed
Check the dryer vent for blockages and vacuum or brush lint from the dryer hose
Clean and repair your patio or deck—power washing or re-staining can make it look like new
Inspect indoor plumbing for leaks and clean faucet aerators throughout your home
Drain your water heater to remove sediment buildup in the tank
Change or clean filters—including those in your water filtration system, ice maker, and air conditioner
Trim trees and shrubs away from AC units—at least 18? from the sides and three feet from the top of the unit
Clean gutters and downspouts – remove debris with your hands and a water hose
Check foundation vents – clear away any debris and check vents for any damages caused by critters
Inspect outdoor plumbing – If you have an in-ground irrigation system, a tune-up will ensure your system is operating efficiently.
Get summer tools ready – for gas mowers and edgers, replace the oil and spark plugs, and get all new oil, fuel and air filters. Lubricate the moving parts and sharpen the mower blade.
Check your attic for any possible critters that may have nested up there during the winter. Check for air vent obstructions and wet spots in the insulation that may indicate a leak. Consider adding additional insulation if yours has compacted.
